We Got a Poacher in Our Territory
The theme of underworld characters in the form of poachers, drunks and prostitutes, as well as mythical ferrymen and rulers of the underworld, has permeated visual art since time immemorial. Painters, sculptors, poets and writers have always been interested in the fate of people on the edge of society, in the imaginary underworld. The term ‘underworld’ has a double meaning – artists are attracted to both the mythological concept of the realm of the dead and the criminal world on the fringes of society. This exhibition is more of a playful Pulp Fiction-type collection, presenting stories from the underworld, than a deep probe into this traditional and inspiring subject. The exhibition We Got a Poacher in Our Territory presents the diverse forms of beings from the underworld in the language of contemporary visual culture. It chooses as its format the telling of visually compelling stories from the underworld – sometimes serious, sometimes mythological, sometimes humorous or suspenseful. The wide range of works and the variety of their conceptions confirm that the underworld is not just one motif among many, but a constant source of inspiration. The theme of the underworld is handled here in a deliberately loose and non-dogmatic manner. As befits the underworld.
